How about that 1 in 3 Americans born in 2000 are expected to develop type 2 diabetes at some point during their life? Facts like these, and others, are a growing concern to us all, which is why when the opportunity presented itself to interview Susan Levin of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) about her thoughts on the new school lunch guidelines, we jumped at the opportunity. On Thursday, January 26, 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack released the final version of their new USDA guidelines for school lunches. As part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, these federally-funded school lunches are expected to cost $3.2 billion over the next five years, but not everyone agrees that they do enough to mitigate the problems of childhood obesity.
