What isn’t up for debate is the fact that the vegan product market is booming, in part, because the number of vegans has doubled in size since 2009 to about 2.5% of the US population. What is even more impressive, however, is the fact that 100 million Americans, or 33% of the population, eat at least one plant-based meal a week.

<![CDATA[Why Gluten Free Isn’t Going Away ]]> Melissa Montovani http://www.soyummifoods.com/blog/why_gluten_free_isnt_going_away Why Gluten Free Isn't Going AwayIf you’re part of the gluten-free community, then you’ve noticed several articles telling you that the gluten free “trend” doesn’t have staying power. Journalists, who don’t need to commit to a gluten-free diet, write some of these articles. Food industry trend-watchers, like Dr. Elizabeth Sloan, are some of the other naysayers. Even if some people are adopting this diet as merely a passing phase in their lives, Sloan’s suggestion that the “gluten-free trend doesn’t have long-term legs” needs to be addressed, and who better to address it than a company that’s committed to making gluten-free products, like Soyummi, for the 1 in 133 Americans who NEED to follow this diet for the rest of their life.

Recently, we considered the question that vegetarians, vegans, and flexitarians face whenever the topic of their plant-based meals comes up — namely, “Are you getting enough protein?” — and showed you that North Americans and people from other developed nations never really have to worry about this issue. We also gave you a partial list of vegan protein sources, but now it’s time to present even more plant-based protein ideas to make sure you keep your diet varied AND balanced.

<![CDATA[Do You Want To Know How Your Food Is Produced?]]> Melissa Montovani http://www.soyummifoods.com/blog/do_you_want_to_know_how_your_food_is_produced Do You Want To Know How Your Food Is Produced?Whether it’s for health reasons or just the desire to make an informed decision when you’re at the grocery store, many Americans — like you — want to know how their food is produced. You aren’ t just concerned about the amount of trans-fats, sodium, or unhealthy sugar-spiking sugars are in the items you pick up on grocery store shelves. You’ re concerned about whether the food you’re eating and feeding your loved ones is genetically modified, or GMO food. In fact 92% of Americans want the FDA to label GMOs. But the question is, what can you do to make your concern noted by the powers that be?

No matter how well meaning these people are, their belief can’t be further from the truth, which means that if you’re interested in reducing or completely eliminating meat protein from your diet, you can do so safely.

From where I sit as a natural product developer (all sustainability issues aside), I believe that the questions we should be asking ourselves regarding in vitro meat, or petri-dish grown meat products are the following:

However, a Dutch team from Maastricht University just announced that it plans on having the first in-vitro hamburger ready by October 2012, and even though it’ll take 10-20 years to make it available to the masses, we’ve got to ask: Would you eat in-vitro meat?

Buying any of these products for your significant other might produce a polite thank you, but little else. Similarly, if you take them out to a restaurant or prepare them a special dinner that doesn’t cater to their dietary needs, then you will have, at best, a disgruntled mate or, at worst, a trip to the hospital in your future. However, when LivingSocial did a survey in the fall of 2011, and D.C. was named the “Top Vegetarian City.” Is it any wonder then that they’d have an entire week dedicated to going meat free or that Soyummi Foods would be excited to support it?

Americans are known as the people who eat more meat than anyone else in the world. In fact, according to some stats that The New York Times writer, Mark Bittman, found, the American diet consists of one-sixth of the world’s meat consumption, even though we’re less than one-twentieth of the population. Whoa…that’s a mouthful! He suggests that this is changing because by the end of 2012, the department of agriculture estimates that Americans will consume 12.2% less meat and poultry than we were back in 2007.

Yeah, sure, gluten free people aren’t measured by their celiac or non-celiac gluten intolerance alone, but that doesn’t mean that food isn’t a big part of most people’s holiday celebrations nor does it negate the fact that the recipient will be happy that you took this extra effort for them. Believe me. Check out the gluten free gifts we recommend for this year's holiday shopping guide:
